Asbestos Anniversary Event
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the UK ban on asbestos. Since 1999, it has been illegal to use or import asbestos, to the benefit of everyone’s long term health.
This victory, of great importance to millions of trade union members, must be marked. Although there are no new imports and uses of asbestos here, there are still thousands of tonnes present in our national infrastructure. We must continue to highlight this ongoing risk. We should also take this opportunity to remind people why this ban is vitally important. In these times of political instability, the repeal of the asbestos ban is not beyond the realms of possibility. The anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to promote these issues.
We therefore intend to combine forces with the Sheffield And Rotheram Asbestos Group (SARAG) to hold an anniversary event for trade unionists in Yorkshire and the East Midlands. This will take place on 25th October in Sheffield, on the border of the two regions. A joint effort will ensure maximum publicity.
The venue will be the Showroom Cinema in the city centre. We will show a film entitled ‘Breathless’. There will also be speakers and an opportunity to ask questions. The event will include a buffet lunch. I have attached a flyer for your information.
If anyone is wishing to join us at the Conference they can book their place by emailing: firstname.lastname@example.org or by telephone on 01246 380415 Please indicate the number of places required and any dietary requirements when booking.
